All of the local bus operators across the metropolitan boroughs of Greater Manchester with the exception of Wigan Corporation had lost their municipal status, and were amalgamated to become one collective operation within South East Lancashire and North East Cheshire - hence the name SELNEC as it later became known under the Passenger Transport Executive. The PTE network was geographically divided into four zones using a colour-coding system to represent each zone. The blue zone became the Central division which covered both the Manchester and Salford areas, the green zone became the Southern division which covered Oldham, Ashton under Lyne and Stockport whereas the purple zone became the Northern division which covered the Rochdale, Bury, Bolton and Leigh areas and, the brown zone became the Cheshire division which covered the areas south of Stockport and areas within the Borough of Trafford. Regardless of which municipal operator they were from previously, the vehicles were repainted into the PTE's orange and white livery to emphasise their uniformity across the network. When SELNEC was taken over by Greater Manchester Transport on the 1st April 1974, Wigan vehicles were added to the PTE fleet, but the livery remained unchanged until the early 1980s. The vehicle liveries are a mixture of both municipal and PTE in this collection. In the line-up here from right to left is ex-Stockport Corporation Leyland PD3 No 5871 KJA 871F with an H38/28R East Lancs body sporting the GMT livery. Alongside it stands Bolton Corporation Leyland Atlantean No 232 FBN 232C with an H45/33F East Lancs body. The third vehicle is Wigan Corporation No 57 HEK 705 which is a Leyland PD3 with an H41/29F Massey body, and the last vehicle is Bolton Corporation No 185 UWH 185 with an H45/33F East Lancs body. Leyland Olympian No 3065 B65 PJA with an H43/30F Northern Counties body was new to Greater Manchester Transport in 1984 and was allocated to Birchfields Road garage, and then to Altrincham garage from 1986 to 1991. Following the Altrincham closure, 3065 spent the remainder of its revenue-earning career at Hyde Road during which it was repainted into Magic Bus livery under the auspices of Stagecoach Manchester. The vehicle still retains this livery after four years in preservation, and is seen here on Boyle Street where the Museum of Transport in Manchester is its current home. 31st October 2009. This vehicle was allocated to Birchfields Road garage and spent most of its career working the 94 route from Levenshulme to Southern Cemetery during its time there before moving to Weaste garage in Salford. The vehicle is seen here on Boyle Street. 31st October 2009. Seddon Pennine IVs were principally used on the Pic-Vic Centreline service across Central Manchester to serve Piccadilly and Victoria railway stations from 1974. They had a B19F Seddon body of which No 1722 XVU 352M was one of the Queens Road vehicles in the Greater Manchester Transport fleet. The other depots to which these vehicles were allocated were Frederick Road, Hyde Road and Princess Road. No 1722 XVU 352M stands outside the Museum of Transport on Boyle Street just yards away from its former home depot. 31st October 2009. It has an H43/30F Northern Counties body of which over 300 vehicles were built over a period of 5 years. The Olympian is seen here at Sport City. 31st October 2009. A nearside view of 1451 NJA 568W which was the first Leyland Olympian to work for Greater Manchester Transport in 1980. It has an H43/30F Northern Counties body, and was the forerunner to the Leyland Olympian 3xxx series which went into production three years later. This vehicle was allocated to Queens Road garage throughout its career in revenue-earning service and is now a preservation survivor. 31st October 2009. New to Greater Manchester Transport in 1979 was Metrobus No 5001 GBU 1V and was amongst the first five in a fleet total of 190 vehicles that was allocated to Princess Road garage. It was common practice under the PTE to allocate these vehicles in batches of five to their designated home depots when they were new. It has an H43/30F Metro-Cammell body, and is seen here at Sport City. 31st October 2009. This vehicle was originally based at Northenden garage when new and then transferred to Stockport when it became an open-topper. The second vehicle to be converted to the same format was Bolton's 7077 WBN 955L which is currently owned by the Selnec Preservation Society. On the left is Leyland Olympian 3001 ANA 1Y which began its career in 1983 at Northenden garage is sporting the revised GMT livery with an H43/30F configuration whereas Leyland Fleetline 6990 DWH 706W with an H43/32F configuration began its career originally as Lancashire United Transport number 613 and was based at Swinton garage from 1980. There are currently two "Heritage" routes in Central London on which the Routemasters are still in use. They are the No 9 which runs from Aldwych to The Royal Albert Hall and the No 15 which runs from Tower Hill to The Strand. Among the locations outside the capital where photos of the Routemasters were taken are, Duxford in Cambridgeshire, Birmingham and Manchester. With regard to technical details, the Routemasters were basically formed into two distinct groups in relation to their seating configuration. The RM with a 27ft body length had an H36/28R Park Royal body whereas the RML with a 30ft body length had an H40/32R Park Royal body. Sunday 8 February 2009: Photos in this collection will comprise of the buses that were an integral part of the London scene in years gone by. Among the locations outside the capital where photos of the Routemasters were taken are, Duxford in Cambridgeshire, Birmingham and Manchester. With regard to technical details, the Routemasters were basically formed into two distinct groups in relation to their seating configuration. The RM with a 27ft body length had an H36/28R Park Royal body whereas the RML with a 30ft body length had an H40/32R Park Royal body.

When Manchester's GM Buses acquired ten ex-London Routemasters back in 1988, they had retained their London Transport fleet numbers and carried the GM fleet numbers of which two examples are seen here. The vehicle on the left is 2207 WLT 429 (ex RM429) and 2202 (776 DYE) ex RM1776 at the southern end of the 143 route in the West Didsbury area of Manchester. A front and offside view of AEC Routemaster RM1136 (136 CLT) which was one of ten vehicles acquired by GM Buses in 1988 for their Piccadilly Line 143 route to West Didsbury. This vehicle carried the GM fleet No 2201 as seen on the white cantrail stripe above the driver's cab. The location here is Parker Street alongside Piccadilly Plaza in Manchester. The view of RM1776 (776 DYE) seen here pulling out from the lay-by onto Palatine Road in West Didsbury for the start of a northbound journey on the 143 route to Manchester City Centre. All ten of the GM Buses AEC Routemasters were allocated to Princess Road garage of which two of the vehicles are seen here outside the depot on Bowes Street. The vehicle nearest the camera is RM1776 (776DYE) which became 2202 in the GM Buses fleet. This is the view of Mosley Street facing west in Manchester City Centre as AEC Routemaster No RM1807 (807 DYE) is about to turn left onto Market Street on the start of its journey to West Didsbury via Cannon Street, Cross Street and Albert Square. This vehicle became 2209 in the GM fleet and, numerically was the last of the ten. Now a resident in the West Midlands is ex London AEC Routemaster RM506 WLT 506 seen here in the coach park at Aston Manor Transport Museum during the Outer Circle Running Day. 12th July 2009.

When the vehicle was taken over by Selnec PTE and given a subsequent repaint into orange and white, it was transferred to Queens Road garage in the autumn of 1972 where it remained until withdrawal in the spring of 1978 after thirteen years in revenue-earning service. Nearest the camera is 7001 VNB 101L which had been a Frederick Road vehicle throughout its career in revenue-earning service whereas 7960 BNC 960T in front of it was allocated new to Northenden garage in 1979 and remained there until the closure of that depot in 1986 after which, it was transferred to Princess Road garage. Both of these vehicles are of an H43/32F configuration. 19th October 2008. This view of 7960 BNC 960T has quite a distinctive appearance in contrast to its pioneer sister in the Park Royal batch of the Selnec/GMT fleet in so far that it has the wrap-round windscreen and a deeper cabside window which is a standard feature on the Northern Counties-bodied examples. When I was living in East London from July 1989 to March 1992, this vehicle was based at Upton Park garage and, whenever I saw it working on the 15, I would travel the full length of the route on it from East Ham to Ladbroke Grove or, vice-versa as RML893 was one of my favourite Routemasters from that depot. When Upton Park lost the 15 route to Bow garage during 2003, this vehicle had subsequently transferred to Willesden garage which was its final home before withdrawal from revenue-earning service. The vehicle is now owned and was entered by The London Bus & Truck Company for this event. 28th September 2008. This MAN single-deck low-floor vehicle had recently acquired the Magic Bus blue livery. 22213 T213 TND currently based at Stagecoach Manchester's Princess Road garage had this livery applied to it principally for the 46/47 circular route in South Manchester. 7th September 2008. During the latter part of the 1990s, North Birmingham Busways had acquired vehicles from various operators across the country of which this ex-Greater Manchester Transport Leyland Atlantean was one of them. The vehicle was formerly GMT No 8564 ANA 564Y which was new to traffic in 1982 and was originally based at Birchfields Road garage. 7th September 2008. Lancashire United Transport's double decker vehicles were predominantly of Northern Counties bodywork of which this 1966 Guy Arab V No 232 WTE 155D is one such example. This vehicle was based at Atherton garage. 7th September 2008. Manchester Corporation Leyland PD2 No 3228 JND 629 had spent its entire life at Queens Road garage when in revenue-earning service. It was one of 65 vehicles in this batch from 1951 with an H32/26R Metro-Cammell body of post-war design. 7th September 2008. On the left is 4151 (originally 8151) VBA 151S was allocated new to Stockport in 1978 whereas 8697 A697 HNB which was new in 1984 spent its life based at Bury.
