This vehicle had entered service in 1963 and is air brake operated with a Gardner 6LW engine and preselector gearbox. It is seen here on Princess Street in Central Manchester taking part in the Lord Mayor's parade procession on the 20th June 1981. 7638_LJA638P.jpg Greater Manchester Transport 7638 LJA 638P is a Leyland Atlantean from 1976 with a Northern Counties H43/32F body and, is seen here outside Manchester Victoria Railway station on the 200 service to Manchester Airport in the PTE's Airport livery in 1985. 8581_ANA581Y.jpg A Mk2 version of the Northern Counties bodied Leyland Atlantean was introduced to the Greater Manchester Transport fleet in 1982. In this view at Bury Interchange, 8581 ANA 581Y was one such vehicle seen here in the "Bus & Coach Council" livery and was allocated new to Frederick Road depot which has since closed. 3460_PND460.jpg Preserved Manchester City Transport 3460 PND 460 is a Leyland Titan PD2 built in 1956 with an MCW Orion H36/30R body and is seen here at the Manchester Museum of Transport on Boyle Street. However, a distinct difference between these and their Daimler CVG6 counterparts (4480-4489 NNB 290-299) was visibly evident in that, the CVG6s had a slide-opening cab door like the London Routemasters whereas the PD2s like this one seen here and the Daimler CVG5s (4490-4509 PND 490-509) had the conventional push-pull cab door. 3515_TNA515.jpg Manchester City Transport 3515 TNA 515 is a Leyland PD2 with a Burlingham H37/28R body and is seen here at Southern Cemetery on Princess Parkway. This vehicle was the first amongst the last six in the Burlingham fleet fitted with a preselector gearbox. 3520_TNA520.jpg Preserved Manchester City Transport 3520 TNA 520 is a Burlingham H37/28R bodied Leyland PD2 seen here at the Manchester Museum of Transport on Boyle Street. Like its sister vehicle 3515 seen earlier in this collection, 3520 is fitted with a preselector gearbox and this vehicle was the last of the six to be fitted with this equipment. 3554_UNB554.jpg 3554 UNB 554 is a Metro-Cammell H37/28R bodied Leyland PD2 in the SELNEC/GMT livery seen here at the back of Hyde Road garage after withdrawal from service minus the intermediate and route number indicator blinds. Twenty of the vehicles in this batch (3571-3590) were fitted with the drop down window vents similar to those as shown on 3668 in this collection. 3666_9866NA.jpg 3666 (9866 NA) is a Leyland PD2 with a Metro-Cammell H37/28R body which later became a Training Vehicle as seen here. 3668_9868NA.jpg Manchester City Transport 3668 (9868 NA) is seen here outside Parrs Wood garage for a crew change on the 31 route from Manchester Piccadilly to Bramhall. Several vehicles in this batch of forty (3631-3670) were fitted with the half-drop saloon window vents and an offside illuminated advertisement panel as seen here. 21st August 1970. 3698_3698VM.jpg This Selnec liveried vehicle is 3698 (3698 VM) which is an ex-Manchester Corporation Leyland PD2 with a Metro-Cammell H37/28R body and is seen here turning into Piccadilly Bus Station on a peak-hour service. This was one of 25 vehicles (3696-3720) in this batch to have front-end ventilators above the lower deck as seen here. 4155_KND916.jpg Manchester City Transport 4155 KND 916 is a Daimler CVG6 with a Metro-Cammell body seen here on a Cross-City route from Chorlton to Hollinwood on the western outskirts of Oldham. The entire fleet in this batch of vehicles were allocated new to Princess Road Depot in the 1950s. One of these (4127 JND 728) is currently preserved at the Manchester Museum of Transport in the same livery as this one. 4589_9589NA.jpg Manchester City Transport 4589 (9589 NA) is a 1961 Daimler CVG6 with a Metro-Cammell H37/28R body seen here in Piccadilly on the peak-hour 88 route from Chorlton to White Moss. 4589 was one of ten vehicles (4580-4589) in this batch fitted with a pre-selector gearbox and air brake operated. None of these were ever repainted into Selnec PTE livery despite being part of its fleet during their last four years in traffic. The depot code sticker (PS) as seen here below the driver's windscreen were applied on all Selnec PTE vehicles from 1973 and 4589 as seen here was allocated to Princess Road depot. 4643_4643VM.jpg Of identical appearance to 4632 is 4643 (4643 VM) seen here at the East Didsbury terminus of the 96 route from Whitefield. Both the 95 & 96 route were jointly operated by Manchester & Salford Corporation and, in this view at East Didsbury, the vehicle behind 4643 is a Salford front entrance Leyland PD2 from 1966 on the 95 route to Whitefield which is 277 JRJ 277E. 130_TRJ130.jpg Salford City Transport 130 TRJ 130 is a Daimler CVG6 with a Metro-Cammell H37/28R body seen here turning out of Victoria Bus Station. 3046_ARJ197B.jpg This ex-Salford Leyland PD2 is 3046 ARJ 197B which was one of the last few in traffic until its withdrawal in 1978. It is seen here on the eastern side of Piccadilly Gardens en route to Stevenson Square. 6175_NDK975.jpg Part of the Rochdale Corporation fleet and later the Northern Division of Selnec PTE was this Weymann H33/28R bodied AEC Regent V. 6175 NDK 975 fitted with a Gardner 6LW engine and pre-selector gearbox was one such vehicle seen here working on one of the town's internal routes. Its sister vehicle 6180 NDK 980 is currently preserved at the Manchester Museum of Transport in original livery and now carries the original fleet number 280. What I liked about these Rochdale vehicles was their engine sound which was very distinct to the 62xx class. The 61xx vehicles from 6168 to 6196 had the sound of a Manchester Corporation (31xx) Leyland PD1 whereas the 62xx vehicles had the sound of an AEC London Routemaster when travelling from a standing start. 6219_TDK319.jpg This is the offside view of 6219 TDK 319, an AEC Regent V seen here at Rochdale. 6219 was the first of the last four (6219-6222) that was fitted with platform doors as depicted in the next photo and is seen here working on the 24 route to Manchester Stevenson Square which was one of two Manchester routes on which these vehicles operated. The second Manchester route was the 17 to Cannon Street which was routed via Castleton & Middleton. 158_WRJ158.jpg Salford City Transport 158 WRJ 158 is a front-entrance Leyland Titan PD2 with a Metro-Cammell H36/28F body seen here south of Piccadilly Railway Station on London Road at its junction with Fairfield Street working the 96 route from Whitefield to East Didsbury. 482_FRJ482.jpg Salford City Transport 482 FRJ 482 is a 1951 Daimler CVG6 with a Metro-Cammell H30/24R body seen here at the southern end of Piccadilly passing Piccadilly Railway Station on its descent down London Road. The 96 was one of four routes across Central Manchester that was jointly operated by Salford Corporation as seen here and Manchester Corporation as can be seen in the next photo. The other three routes that were operated jointly by the two municipal operators were the 57 from Swinton to Thornley Park, the 77 from Pendlebury to Reddish(Bulls Head) and the 95 from Whitefield to East Didsbury on which these Daimlers were regularly used on those routes as well as this one. 3550_UNB550.jpg Manchester Corporation 3550 UNB 550 is a Leyland PD2 with a Metro-Cammell H37/28R body seen here at the northern end of London Road passing Piccadilly Railway Station on its descent whilst working the 96 route to East Didsbury. Notice the twin hopper vents on the front facing windows on the upper deck which had since been removed. However, 3525 UNB 525 was the only vehicle in this batch of 100-strong to retain this feature throughout its working life. This was the original Manchester Corporation livery when 3550 had entered service in 1958. 3659_9859NA.jpg Manchester Corporation 3659 (9859 NA) is a Leyland PD2 with a Metro-Cammell H37/28R body seen here at the southern end of London Road approaching the Mancunian Way roundabout. 4447_NNB257.jpg This is the view of Piccadilly on the eastern side of Piccadilly Gardens as 4447 NNB 257 from Northenden Garage begins its journey south to Benchill in Wythenshawe on the 105 route. 4447 is a 1954 Daimler CVG6 with a Metro-Cammell H32/28R body seen here passing 2081 LNA 281G which is a Daimler Fleetline with Park-Royal bodywork on the one-man operated 100 route to Woodhouse Park which is also in Wythenshawe. 3098_FRJ252D.jpg Wearing the Selnec/GMT livery is 3098 FRJ 252D, an ex-Salford Leyland PD2 with a Metro-Cammell H36/28F body dating back to 1966 is seen here on Portland Street before turning into Piccadilly Bus Station. 3699_3699VM.jpg 3699 (3699 VM) is an ex-Manchester Corporation Leyland PD2 with a Metro-Cammell H37/28R body in the Selnec PTE livery seen here at the western end of Hyde Road on the approach to Ardwick Green roundabout. The building to the far right of the photo is Hyde Road Garage where this vehicle was allocated. 3720_3720VM.jpg 3720 (3720 VM) was the last of the Leyland PD2s in the Manchester Corporation fleet and carries the Selnec PTE livery as seen here on Piccadilly at its junction with Lever Street. 4565_TNA565.jpg 4565 TNA 565 and 4563 TNA 563 are seen here at the back of Hyde Road depot in this view. These are both Daimler CVG6s with a Burlingham body and had worked predominantly on the South Manchester routes. However, the Princess Road vehicles did work on the Cross-City routes to Middleton on the 80 from Chorlton, White Moss on the 88 also from Chorlton, and to Moston (Gardener's Arms) on the 112 route from Sale(Helsby Road) during the Manchester Corporation/Selnec era. 4568_TNA568.jpg 4568 TNA 568 is a Daimler CVG6 with a Burlingham body seen here at the eastern end of Portland Street at its junction with Aytoun Street in Manchester City Centre. 4568 is seen here with the new Greater Manchester Transport logo when this operator had taken over from Selnec PTE on the 1st April 1974. RM1776_776DYE.jpg Ex-London Routemaster RM 1776 (776DYE) still carried the GM fleet number 2202 as seen here at the Hazel Grove terminus of the 192 route. When this vehicle was repainted to Selnec PTE livery, it became 6203 when it was renumbered. All vehicles that were given the 6xxx fleet number were designated to the Northern Division of Selnec's PTE network which covered all routes within the Rochdale, Bury and Bolton areas. 1341_ONE741.jpg Burlingham bodied trolleybus No 1341 ONE 741 is seen here at the eastern end of Portland Street in the centre of Manchester. 4438_NNB248.jpg A frontal view of Metro-Cammell bodied Daimler CVG6 No 4438 NNB 248 as seen here at Piccadilly Bus Station. Despite the application of the new helvetica design fleet number on the radiator cover, 4438 had retained its Manchester Corporation livery in what was clearly the Selnec era. The new design of fleet numbers were applied to these vehicles in 1973. 4446_NNB256.jpg Amongst the 80-strong Metro-Cammell bodied (4400-4479) Daimlers, 4446 NNB 256 from Northenden Garage was one of only three vehicles in this batch to receive a repaint into Selnec PTE livery during the 1970s. However, it is seen here at Piccadilly Bus Station in original Manchester Corporation livery and has oversized front-end mudguards. This view of Piccadilly Bus station was photographed in August 1955. 4590_4590NE.jpg 4590 (4590 NE) was the first of the Manchester Corporation Metro-Cammell H43/33F bodied Daimler Fleetlines and is seen here at Piccadilly Bus Station. This vehicle entered service in 1962. 3307_NNB147.jpg 3307 NNB 147 is seen here at Piccadilly Bus Station working the 162 route to Gatley. The PD1s were far slower than their PD2 (32xx) counterpart and were restricted to peak-hour duties. 3684_3684NE.jpg 3684 (3684 NE) had been a Queens Road vehicle throughout its working life. It is seen here at Rochdale working the 17 route from Manchester Cannon Street. 3006_WRJ155.jpg Ex Salford City Transport Leyland Titan PD2 No 3006 WRJ 155 with a Metro-Cammell H36/28F body is seen here at Warrington Arpley working the No 10 route to Manchester which was jointly operated with Lancashire United Transport. The Salford vehicles and their Manchester counterpart were designated to the Central Division of the PTE network when Selnec was formed in 1969. Accordingly, the Leyland vehicles of both the Atlantean and PD2 variants acquired the 3xxx fleet number whereas their Daimler counterpart acquired the 4xxx fleet number when they were renumbered. This strategic method of fleet renumbering was based on the Manchester Corporation principle in order to differentiate between Daimler and Leyland vehicles with identical bodywork within the Central Division fleet. 4495_PND495.jpg 4495 PND 495 was one of twenty slow speed Daimler CVG5s with an MCW Orion H36/28R body seen here in Trafford Park. 4179_KND940.jpg 4179 KND 940 is seen here at Trafford Bar on the A56 Chester Road. 3295_JND696.jpg Manchester Corporation 3295 JND 696 is seen here at Manchester's Stevenson Square working the 98 route to Waterhead which is situated to the east of Oldham town centre. These Leyland PD2s with Leyland Farington H32/26R bodywork from 1950 were commonly referred to as the "Ugly Ducklings" as their basic design from an aesthetic viewpoint was far from attractive. 4433_NNB243.jpg Two Metro-Cammell bodied Daimler CVG6s stand alongside each other in the bus park on Chester Road. The vehicle on the left is 4433 NNB 243 with a standard front end appearance whereas its sister vehicle 4467 NNB 277 by contrast has plain facing windows on the upper deck with a distinctly narrow gap. 4474 & 4475 from Hyde Road Depot were of similar appearance to the latter. Both vehicles in this photo were allocated to Princess Road Depot prior to their withdrawal from traffic in 1974 after twenty years in revenue-earning service. 3638_9838NA.jpg 3638 (9838 NA) is a 1961 Metro-Cammell H37/28R bodied Leyland PD2 seen here with twin hopper vents on the front windows on the upper deck which were subsequently removed. 322_TDK322.jpg A front and nearside view of Rochdale Corporation AEC Regent V No 322 TDK 322 with a Weymann H33/28RD body. 322 which later became 6222 following the Selnec takeover was the last of four vehicles with this configuration. 4042_ARJ208B.jpg Ex Salford Corporation Daimler Fleetline 4042 ARJ 208B with a Metro-Cammell H44/33F body is seen here at Victoria Bus Station during a crew change working the 95 route from East Didsbury to Whitefield. Throughout the Manchester Corporation fleet, the Daimler CCG6s (4650-4654) were the only half cab vehicles in the Daimler fleet post-1960 not to have a preselector gearbox. 4652 from Birchfields Road garage is seen here at Mersey Square in Stockport working the Limited Stop 20 service from Manchester Piccadilly to Woodford. 3424_PND424.JPG Leyland PD2 No 3424 PND 424 stands at the East Didsbury terminus of the 95 route from Whitefield. 3635__9835NA_.JPG A front and offside view of Manchester Corporation Leyland PD2 No 3635 (9835 NA) with a Metro-Cammell H37/28R body stands outside Parrs Wood garage working the 45 route from Manchester (Albert Square) to Gatley. Fitted with a Guy constant mesh gearbox, identifiable by having a wider front grille necessitated by the wider-spaced chassis frame. The combination of a Daimler chassis and a Guy gearbox made gear changing very difficult and were not popular with drivers at the established Daimler garages in the southern part of the city. (Photo courtesy of Steve Kemp) 190_ARJ190B.JPG Salford Corporation No 190 ARJ 190B with an H36/28F Metro-Cammell body is seen here on Colgate Lane at Manchester Docks. It was the second of two Daimler CCG6s new to the operator in 1964 as part of a Vehicle Evaluation Programme as the majority of vehicles in the Salford fleet comprised of Leyland PD2s and Daimler CVG6s regarding the half-cab buses. Both 189 and 190 were not popular with the bus crews who had driven them as the combination of a Guy constant-mesh gearbox on a Daimler chassis was deemed incompatible thus making gear changes rather difficult. It was the same situation for the Manchester Corporation bus crews who had driven 4650-4654 which were also Daimler CCG6s, but had an H37/28R Metro-Cammell body when new in 1963. 3663__9863NA_.JPG Manchester Corporation Leyland PD2 No 3663 (9863 NA) is seen here on Piccadilly near the Market Street junction with Mosley Street. 3669__9869NA_.JPG An offside view of Manchester Corporation Leyland PD2 No 3669 (9869 NA) as seen here on South Parade near to Drake Street in Rochdale. 127_AJA127B.JPG A front and offside view of AEC Renown No 127 AJA 127B seen here in Selnec PTE livery at Piccadilly Bus Station in Manchester.
